Maya Liberman

Maya Liberman was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and immigrated to Canada in the late 1980s. She currently resides in Toronto, where she has pursued her passion for both art and education. Influenced by renowned artists such as Yaacov Agam, Romero Britto, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Victor Vasarely, and others, Maya developed her own unique style, incorporating zentangle techniques for therapeutic purposes.

The art of Zentangle, a meditative drawing method, involves creating intricate patterns with repetitive strokes. For Maya, each stroke on the canvas is driven by her emotions in the moment, allowing her hand and the ink to move freely. This process is calming and grounding, offering her a sense of therapeutic release. The repetitive nature of the patterns brings rhythm and flow, helping to alleviate stress and foster mindfulness.

Maya also applies Zentangle in her work with students who experience anxiety. She uses it as a de-escalation technique, helping students focus on the repetitive movements to overcome stress. By concentrating on creating patterns, they are able to relax and manage their emotions more effectively.

For over 36 years, Maya has worked in early childhood and special education, integrating art into her teaching methods. Balancing her roles as both an artist and educator, she continues to inspire creativity and healing through her work and her life journey.
